Taste of British Aires

Post by Eddiey »

Taste of British Aires
This is to encourage establishing Aires throughout the UK.
I started this off as a wine cheese and cider trails. It very quickly became obvious that there could be problems making tours, and also there are lot more worthy products out there made by British producers
At the present time it will probably not be possible to list separate tours for UK products. We simply do not have the number of established Aires to do this.
Problems such as suitable routes, i.e. narrow roads and low bridges are also factors to take into consideration in this decision.
Therefore, I feel it would be better to add any Aires established in this group of TBA , directly on to our Aires map. This will allow anyone using the Aires map to plan their own routes to literally suit their own taste.
Routes could come later.
Keith Hepburn of CAMpRA, has kindly agreed to insert any new TBAs on CAMpRAs map. To do this he will need accurate information.
Only those producers having an Aire, as defined by CAMpRA, can be listed on our TBA map.

This page will be the main/initial source for information for addresses and URLs to search on the internet.
These addresses will remain on this page and others can and will be added here but, must also should be copied and appear with any responses in their relative areas.

So think of any product that is worthy of Made in Britain, wine, cheese, cider, beer, whisky, leathercraft, carvings, jewellery, art etc, etc.
Search them out, add their contact addresses on here and where possible in the correct areas on the Forum.

PLEASE NOTE---OUR AIRES MAP HAS BEEN DISCONTINUED ON OUR CAMpRA SITES--FOR NOW
HOWEVER KEITH IS CONTINUING PRIVATELY WITH THE MAP SO WE CAN STILL LOAD SITES OF INTEREST ON THAT MAP.
MY MAIN OBJECTIVE IS TO PERSUADE BRITISH INDUSTRIES TO PRODUCE MAPS OF THEIR OWN WITH AIRES.

I have kicked this off with a letter to the British Wine Producers Association.

Dear Sir/Madam,
I belong to a very rapidly growing none confrontational Motorhome group on Facebook called CAMpRA, (Campaign for Real Aires), an Aire is simply a parking area where a motorhome can stay overnight. Also please take a look at our website CAMpRA.org.uk which contains lots of useful information including a business hub.
We are a group of volunteers only seeking to promote the establishment of Aires in the UK, similar to those in Europe where there are over 13,000. At present the UK has hardly any.
As you probably know France has a number of wine trails, which are followed by many thousands of motorhome tourists.
Motorhomes can park overnight on the producers sites/ Aires, and sample/buy their produce if they want to. There is no charge to park overnight and no expectation of a purchase, the producers use this as a way of attracting business and it works very well. You can if need be, make a small charge for parking or offer this parking fee as a token, to be redeemed in the producers shop.
Please see; France Passion: Great stopovers with your motorhome in France (france-passion.com)
France Passion has over 10,000 motorhome stops.
Here in the UK, motorhome tourism is part of a huge tourist market which is largely untouched and currently worth up to £1b. The UK has always been hopelessly trailing behind Europe with the provision of Aires, and with over 357,000 British registered motorhomes (motorcaravans) + thousands of visiting motorhomes, +Staycation, the need for Aires is now even more acute.

Would you consider asking your members, if they are interested in attracting more business through a different market, they are probably not aware of?
How can they achieve this?
By establishing an overnight parking area for motorhomes through an Exemption Certificate, which allows 5 motorhomes to park without the need for planning permission. The application form is available on our website. There is currently no charge for the certificate. Aire Planning Exemption – MotorhomeFun Support
What is needed?
A level area for parking.
A self contained motorhome needs to replenish water every 3 to 5 days so it would be helpful if they had a fresh water hosepipe and an area for disposal of waste/toilet water.
Electricity is not necessary.

The Benefits to Your Producers
Attracting more buyers for their produce.
Some of your members may have restaurants, coffee shops or cafes as well as produce to sell where extra income would be earned.
They would be attracting business from a different relatively untapped tourism market.
Over 91% of motorhomes are owned by people over 40, a large number of these are retirees usually with income to spend.
Free advertising.
We are currently constructing a map of various British producers, to be named; TBA (TASTE of BRITISH AIRES), which will be added to our map of British Aires.
We are rapidly expanding group with over 19,000 members in 10 months and associated with other groups such as, Camping Car Park, 460,000 members, Search for Sites, 158,000 members and Motorhome Fun, 48,000 members.
Your Aire entries on our map will be rapidly picked up and advertised on these other sites and beyond.
If your members are interested in increasing their footfall, please ask them to contact me and I will help point them in the right direction via email or Zoom.

Best Regards,
Eddie Yarrow

We have a lot of cheese producers in our area.
Do we want to do this to the national associations or target producers separately?

Both but local contacts are better especially now you can visit or speak to them, these local businesses will attract passing trade with a waste point if they have limited parking space but even more with an Aire.

Point out that with our association with other groups we have access to over 600,000 members and 158,000 registered and use searchforsites

Definitely both. The associations might just prompt their members and if there is a business to a CAMpRA member they can chase that up face to face.

Here is another I have emailed basically using my original eamail as a template and restructuring slightly.
Addressed to Neil Walker
Head of Comms & Marketing
neil.walker@siba.co.uk

Dear Neil,
I hope you don’t mind me drawing your attention to a potential market.

Did you know there is a largely untapped market of over 400,000 touring motorhomes in the UK with the potential spending power of almost £1billion?

Furthermore, there is a huge need for overnight parking areas which you could exploit.
Also we are currently producing a map to show where we think the best of British produce is located, similar to France Passion. France Passion: Great stopovers with your motorhome in France (france-passion.com)

There is a source of income here for your members to tap into with very little outlay, by setting up an overnight Aire they would also be included in our touring map. If you are interested please read on.
