There’s been notices put up on some car parks in the Borough, and one at Brush Quay, Gorleston caught my eye when it was put on the Gorleston Facebook page. It brings in charges for locals who park in the free car parks. Now it seems, many will park instead on Quay Road where visiting motorhomers prefer to park/stopover. In turn this will affect local beach businesses whose patrons would normally park there. It’s feared this is bad news all around. The Consolidation and Variation Order 2025 is open to comments from the public.
I have emailed the Norfolk County Council Parking Team (trafficorders@norfolk.gov.uk) to put forward a proposal that Norfolk CC and Great Yarmouth Borough Council both consult with CAMpRA about supporting Motorhome Tourism with some safe off-road parking places and a Service Point. The point being that this category of tourist can benefit places like this, particularly off peak season. The latter is essential because there’s really nowhere in the winter six months to empty elsan waste or grey water.
I have pointed out that other similar councils, such as at Fleetwood, have profited enough from the provision of stopover spaces in car parks to install services by adapting a toilet block (one of which lies abandoned opposite Brush Quay car parks) from the £26,000 income made with a charge of £5/night per van. Also stating that over £268,000 was spent there by motorhomers.
I’ve received two emails confirming receipt of this email, one from Jennifer Batten, Senior Lawyer, Solicitor (Planning Team) at nplaw Norfolk CC who has forwarded it to the officer at GYBC, dealing with feedback on this matter, who I understand to be Lorraine Houghton, Parking Services Manager, 01493 846561. Head of Customer Services at GYBC is Miranda Lee, with whom I have had some dismissive email correspondence back in the lockdown period.

In response….
Dear Mr Shelbourne
In relation to your enquiry, I can advise that Members at the Council Meeting 20th March 2025, considered the consolidation and update the existing parking regulations which included the introduction of seasonal car park charging at brush Quay Car Park, Gorleston. Following the consultation period of the draft ‘The Borough of Great Yarmouth (Off-Street Parking Places) (Lorry and Coach Parking Places) and (Residential Parking Places) Consolidation and Variation Order 2025’ and in consideration of the concerns raised in relation to charging on Brush Quay Car Park, Members of the Council approved a recommendation to remove the seasonal car park charging at Brush Quay Car Park from the Consolidation and Variation order.
Yours sincerely
