UK signs for directions to Aire locations

Post by pauls59@yahoo.co.uk »

A group post, 7th October 2020 by Robert Bradley, related to his correspondence with the Department of Transport regarding Signage on our highways to direct traffic to an Aire.
He received a reply back;
Dear Mr Bradley
Motorhome signage.
Department for Transport Great Minster House
33 Horseferry Road London

Thank you for your email of 10 August regarding traffic signs for motorhomes.
The Department for Transport sets legislation on traffic signs for use by traffic authorities. The Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016 (TSRGD) sets out the design and conditions of use for traffic signs that may be used on roads in England, Scotland and Wales.

Thank you for your further email of 8 September to the Department for Transport about traffic signs to indicate facilities and parking for motorcaravans.
As I previously explained, all traffic signs for use by traffic authorities are prescribed via the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016 (TSRGD). TSRGD sets out the design and conditions of use for traffic signs that can be placed on roads in England. This ensures national consistency of signs. There are no current plans to update TSRGD.
When TSRGD is next revised the Department will hold a consultation as part of the process of making new legislation. I suggest you make your representations for a new sign to be included during this consultation period.
The next

This created 50 comments; two from Hendy Armstrong - The brown tourism signs are already in use - precedent set. These can be created by Local Councils.

Only tourist signs erected on Highways Agency roads (motorways and those A roads that are designated as Strategic Road Network - most are now dual carriageways) have to go through a national authorisation process. For those which come off local authority maintained roads (and for motorhome parks most would) it's the Local Authority that authorises them - so would either be a county council or Unitary or Metropolitan council. These don't have to be a national standard hence the plethora of different signs we see for castles etc. So we can use the NI Borough Council signs when approaching your local council. If a council establishes an aire and doesn't do signage then we just ask them if they would install a road sign. They would decide what goes up. Same with private ones
(The next consultation is in 1 or 2 years time)

I then googled for Brown Tourist Signs, numerous results. including ;guidance on how to apply for them from www.gov.uk. As well as VisitScotland.org and various English Councils..) I also discovered a company - Roadsignsdirect.co.uk who will make 'Brown Tourist Signs' from £30 ex vat.

Tony Silvester if the groups aims are fully realised then as well as fully fledged Aires there will be more CL type sites with proper facilities for motorhomes. Thus the operators will want to put signs up, this will be followed by discussions with the Local Authorities or Highways Agency, who will want to remove them because they are not approved, and cannot supply a approved sign. If Aire locations are established in every area of the country when the consultations take place the reps from the authorities will be wanting to get rid of a headache! One can only hope.

Attachments has the European Aire symbol and a picture of the Brown Tourism signs erected at The Commons, Donaghadee , Northern Ireland.

Where we get a new Aire established in the UK, should we be asking the Local Council/Authorities or the Site owner to erect the relevant Brown Tourism sign, especially when as above I located a UK firm that can manufacture them from £30 ex vat. ?????
