Honesty pay-per-stay stopover

Post by VandM »

As we're nearing the point of opening our new motorhome stopover/Aire we're looking at a fair pricing for per night stays (regardless of the number of people in a motorhome).
Facilities will be black and grey water disposal, fresh water, level hardstanding, food waste composting.
We're a micro farm on a small island within the Orkney archipelago with stunning south facing sea and island views.
The entire site infrastructure, simple as it is, has been created from our own funds but we're considering using a "pay what you feel it's worth" pricing structure.
We'd give visitors an envelope for them put in money to the value of what they feel is fair for their one or two night stay.

Has anyone heard of this kind of charging scheme and what are your thoughts on it's viability?

Slainte.

Lovely place and you sound like lovely people, hope to meet you some day.
The only place we have been to with a similar donation box idea was Boroughbridge in Yorkshire.
We donated £10 per night and were disgusted with a couple next to us who tried to justify paying nothing.
Do yourselves a favour decide the charges and make dam sure they pay.
Good luck with your project.

We are also recommending a new site, who have set up to help small Aires called Airestop, they have been asking CAMpRA for guidance.

They operate a payment by scanning a QR code.

https://airestop.co.uk/

Just mention CAMpRA if you contact them.

We've come across this payment method (at Caerlaverock Castle Corner Camp Site) this seems to work quite well for them

I believe I also answered your question on Facebook, about how much to suggest your customers should pay

Whilst many of us will pay there are a certain number of people who will try to free load I do suggest after thinking about it you should find some method of charging for your services properly
Regards

Have you advertised on Searchforsites?
It is free and used by over 184,000 motorcaravan owners.
We will also add you to our “new UK Aires” list if you send us details.

We have viewed the Airestop website as it looked like it could be useful, but.....
It says it can "find - Pay -Stay" but has no search facility (they recommend using SearchForSites), they appear to be purely a payment handling company, and their fee of 9% is way over the likes of iZettle or SumUp (fees of about 1.6%).
They also appear to have a link to Spivolt Ltd (incorporated one day later than AireStop on 24th August 2021).
Looking at their detailed T&C's shows they expect to harvest a vast amount of data from all users and will send/sell this data to other companies.
So overall we're not sure what benefit they bring over established, and much cheaper, payment handling options and are concerned as to the data harvesting from using their facility.
It may be that they hope to grow into an AirBnB for the Aires/stopovers sector.

They have set up to respond for the need for Aires to have a simple way to pay.
As Aires are listed on Searchforsites their reference is to use Searchforsites as a search database they are only about payment not taking bookings.

It is not a CAMpRA site so if you have concerns then please do not use them.
You can of course just set up a pay by paypal or bank transfer as some do but the envelope works for most people.
