Post by Steve »

Parking charges coming for The Stray Redcar but the plus side of this is the council are going to let you park overnight legally shortly but it will cost £15 .

Email sent:

Dear clr Garbutt, can I start by thanking the council for the proposed change to the traffic order to allow overnight stays for motorcaravans.
We are a volunteer group promoting the benefits to local businesses from touring motorcaravans, something that has been recognised by Mainland Europe for several years.
A survey of 9,000 UK motorcaravan owners in 2020 indicated the potential revenue to the local economy is £1 billion per year, in fact a recent report from a town in Ireland estimates that allowing motorcaravans to stay overnight brings €1.5million euros per year to the town.

CAMpRA UK Ltd are a not for profit organisation who are supporting several councils in the UK and we are stakeholders on the APPG for Park Homes and Campsites.

We have received lots of comments from our 27,000 members who support the idea of visiting Redcar but question how you arrived at the pricing structure to park on a car park that is empty at night?

CAMpRA do not generally get involved in pricing as that is down to the owners of the site, however we thought it prudent too draw your attention to this as we would like to see the idea attract visitors to stay and spend locally.

The main question being raised is if its only £6 to park all day when the car park is in demand why is it £15 for a motorcaravan to park overnight when the car park is empty?

Will this encourage motorcaravans stay and have a meal out or leave the town?
Will it encourage them to park safely in dedicated areas or look for a residential street or other free parking spot?

Overnight parking for self contained motorcaravans are commonly known as an “Aire”, an Aire is not a campsite it is overnight parking and sleeping with all activities wholly within the vehicle, these are short stay parking that allow motorcaravan owners to visit and spend time and money in a local area (they have no car).

I have attached our briefing document that we have prepared as a quick guide to councils, please feel free to visit our business hub where there is lots of information available and of course we are available to discuss by phone or zoom if we can assist you.
Remember we are a volunteer group so no costs involved.
Our survey powerpoint presentation is available to download, please feel free to distribute as required.
