SOUTH HAMS DISTRICT COUNCIL MOTOR HOMES POLICY

Post by Callisp2 »

CAMpRA had a success today.

Today the SHDC executive voted in favour of introducing a policy of allowing overnight parking on some of its car parks. There will be a charge of £10 for most sites and £15 for the sites that are expected to be most used because of their locations. The car parks will be monitored by enforcement officers and only motorhomes and campervans with full washing and toilet facilities and holding tanks will be allowed. Anyone discharging Gray or Black waste will be prosecuted. There is a 48 hour maximum stay. This policy is for a 12 month trial and if successful SHDC will provide service points at these sites. Please use these sites sensibly we don't want the trial to fail.

I have uploaded the policy.

Please contact me if you have any questions.
Regards Pete.

This is a really good result, especially since they have listened to our comments about the price. Well done all those concerned! Let's hope now that it is not abused and that they will see the full benefits and install waste and water points.

Interesting paper - the numbers seem conservative - 4 stays per week for 32 weeks - hopefully they will get 52 weeks of the year. Hopefully that is worst case but it still meets them covering costs in the first year.

Just seen this post having returned from a trip to Devon. I stayed on a Camping & Caravanning club site in the South Hams for £14 and a very lovely campsite in North Devon for £7.

Whilst it's great that the council are allowing campervans to stay in car parks, the prices they're expecting are outrageous. I remember staying overnight in the in the Slapton Sands car park about 10 years ago (when it was also allowed) for about £2. Surely we should congratulate the council for their thinking but press them to charge more realistic prices.

Hi Richard, we often stay on small campsites but they are rarely close to towns, open all year or have hard standing and most need booking months in advance unless you are prepared to just go where you can find a site.

The idea of Aires is a network of parking and waste points for use when touring.

CAMpRA are campaigning for Aires, we would obviously like them to be free like Europe but that is not feasible at the moment in the UK. We will always quote the figures from our survey, £5 to park £10 with waste and water but we have no say in what councils or anyone else charges.

If we get a new Aire we have achieved our aims, if its too expensive motorcaravan owners will either pay or avoid the area and use a campsite or move to another town.

Its one step at a time, Rome was not built in a day, changing attitudes, getting overnight parking and waste points in the UK is a huge challenge. Some groups have been trying for 20 years.

CAMpRA have over 60 in 10 months with many more to be announced soon.

Competition will bring down prices but we have to get them accepted first.

Extremely disappointing to hear that the consultation has resulted in them dropping the 5 prime sites - unfortunately I can’t watch the council meeting in Thursday morning. Will be ‘interesting’ to hear the conversations. Wish they would consider the prime sites for the off season.

Motorhomes Motor to the South Hams

Issued: 28 May 2021

South Hams District Council have unanimously agreed to progress their amended 12-month pilot motorhome plans, following Thursday’s Executive committee meeting.

The District Council have agreed to the pilot scheme that will allow self-contained motorhomes and campervans, with their own toilet facilities, to stay at five South Hams car parks.

Following a comprehensive consultation with communities, which resulted in nearly 750 responses, the Executive adapted their original proposals, which resulted in new recommendations, before they agreed to the pilot scheme.

The Council are very clear that this scheme is only for self-contained motorhomes and campervans with their own on-board toilet facilities for a fee of £10 per night, overnight from 6 p.m. until 9 a.m. The pilot will allow overnight sleeping for a maximum two-night consecutive stay with no return within 48 hours.

The following five car parks in these towns across the District are included in the pilot scheme:

· Ivybridge, Leonards Car Park

· Kingsbridge, Cattlemarket Car Park

· Modbury, Poundwell Meadow Overflow Car Park

· Totnes, Longmarsh Car Park

· Dartmouth, Park & Ride Car Park

The aim of the scheme is to support and increase local tourism. There are ever-increasing numbers of motorhomes and campervan users opting to use car parks and other locations for overnight stays in the South Hams, and this is anticipated to increase because of restrictions on overseas travel due to the pandemic.

Cllr Keith Baldry, South Hams District Council’s Executive Member for Environment, said: “Many businesses depend on tourists for their incomes and that is one of the key reasons why we are doing this pilot scheme, to try and encourage trade into our towns. The other reason is to help tourists who want to travel to the area without having to pre-book if they don’t know where they want to stay in advance. This gives them the freedom to make the choice of where they want to stay for short periods of time and balances the needs of both residents and visitors. Both of which are exceptionally important to the Council.

“If we make it easier for those motorhome and campervan owners, who have their own toilet facilities on-board, to visit the South Hams when it’s really busy and our campsites are full, then they will add to our local economy at a time when our businesses desperately need the extra support.

“We will put systems in place to ensure that visitors follow the rules, but they also have a responsibility to respect the sites they stay at and not to cause anti-social behaviour and we have confidence that they won’t. It’s up to them to make sure this works and we’ll be there to support them.”
