What's the etymology?

Post by Hairyloon »

Sorry if this is a silly question, but where does the word "Aire" come from?
I presume it originates from the "Aires de Service" in France, but the direct translation is "Area" and that doesn't make sense on its own.

I'd never heard it (apart from in the river) before I happened upon this group.
