That's my email away to the four councillors in my local ward of Stonehaven and Lower Deeside.

The email is very much focussed on the provision of an aire (or aires) in Stonehaven and surrounding area but at the same time promotes all the usual CAMpRA messages & benefits on the creation of aires. Hope you don't mine, but I encouraged contact with the leadership if required.

I've also discussed the RTIF, the limited Aberdeenshire successes so far. I requested details of any applications that may be in the pipeline that the councillors may be aware of.

I highlighted examples of what I would say are basic, mid & upper examples of aires - both in terms of charges & facilities provided. They were:

‘Stay the Night’ facilities that Scottish Forestry commission operate.
Lochore Meadows facility ran by Fyfe council.
Findhorn West Beach Motorhome Stopover.

I'll update following any response.

Ok, so I received very supportive responses from two of the councillors (and to be fair to the other two, they were CC'd and could probably add nothing).

Turns out Stonehaven councillors have been looking at improving parking for moho's since 2017, albeit in response to resident complaints about vans parking along the beach front. Long story short, a ban on this can not be enforced without a new byelaw to do so. At the time, the councillors were supportive of introducing the ban, however time has moved on & this is currently off the table. The councillor I am communicating with is well aware of CAMpRA and is in fact already a member of the facebook group!! - probably after the recent online consultation for sports & leisure improvements was swamped with requests for an aire ;)

Both of the councillors that responded are now opposed to the parking ban and wish to find a positive solution to the issues. They fully recognise the importance of moho's being welcomed in Stonehaven.

'STONEHAVEN INFORMAL MOTORHOME PARKING MANAGEMENT' is an ongoing discussion that has considered 10 sites in recent years, 4 of which were explored further and resulted in only 1 being deemed practically & legally possible - but it was not sanctioned.

Further progress was delayed by Covid. Recently it was agreed that the Director of Infrastructure Services undertakes a traffic management review for the Beach Road/Beachfront area to kick things off again. I'm not sure what's next but this is how the councillors response was signed off -

The key thing about the amendment was that we agreed that a traffic management review should be undertaken. This was not progressed immediately and then further delayed due to Covid-19. However, the traffic management review is now being actively progressed and I am hoping and expecting that an aspect of this review will include what positive ideas can be brought forward to address motorhome/campervan parking in the town. Local Roads’ Officers do understand the importance of trying to address this issue. I certainly believe that aires are the best way forward and I am promoting that idea to officers and others who might be able to help and I am aware of a range of ideas floating around that can contribute to a response.

By coincidence there is a pop up consultation this week on a Community Action Plan -

I'm going to meet the councillor there on Thursday for an informal chat on all things aires :)

After Thursdays chat, there is nothing further to add really at this stage. I've now got confirmation that 3 out of the 4 local councillors support welcoming moho's to Stonehaven (the 4th's opinion is unknown to me as opposed to being against) and they want to find a suitable location. Which is easier said than done in Stonehaven - it lacks unused open space that hasn't got different complications associated with the variety of places you may think as obvious spots.
I'm fairly confident we'll at least achieve a few marked up parking bays, however a full blown aire will be a tough one, but it's not out of the question yet.
I'll keep the forum updated with any progress.

Try to find a location for a cebtral waste point, if you find thatvparking becomes easier with a campra notice directing motorcaravans to the waste point.

Car washes are easy places and its easy money for them, but public toilets, garage (and we are working with Revolution Laundry who will run the pipe work for a waste point if they install an laundry machines.
Leisure centre, town hall etc

I've suggested recycling centres to Perth & Kinross for moho waste as they are staffed 8am to 5pm to collect any payment, they have water and they have waste (or space for waste tanks?)
