Visit Derbyshire

Help our towns to recover from lockdown
There are over 386,000 Motorcaravans in the UK and 82% travel year round.
Mostly owned by older travellers the estimated annual spend in local shops, pubs and restaurants is over £850 million.
Derbyshire towns can benefit from a share of this revenue to support your local businesses by simply encouraging touring motorcaravans to visit your towns.
All they need is somewhere to park for up to 48 hours close to towns or attractions.
Modern motorcaravans are self contained units and mainland Europe has been tapping into this revenue stream for many years, the covid pandemic has forced us to look for additional ways to rejuvenate our towns and now is the time to embrace this large sector of our tourism market and welcome them to Derbyshire to spend their money with us.
And its so easy just provide overnight parking in existing car parks,

or utilise unused areas like the disused car parks or areas a dedicated Aire (motorcaravan car park). Canterbury is a perfect example of providing facilities in the park and ride which prevents motorcaravans driving through the town. Ideal for as an example for visitors to Derby. Below is a secure Aire.

An Aire is Motorcaravan parking only with no external equipment, every 3 to 4 days they need to fill up with water and empty waste tanks it would be beneficial to provide a motorcaravan service point locally to support the touring motorcaravans, this would be an easy to add as an addition to public toilets.

The photographs are examples of what is easily achievable.

I would welcome an opportunity to discuss these further so please feel free to contact me to discuss further or feel free to download documents from our website www.campra.org.uk

Yet to receive a reply from Derbyshire County Council or North East Derbyshire District Council

I have resent emails and would request anyone in Derbyshire to resend as well IF DCC are doing their normal tricks then we may well have a battle on

Our local councillors in High Peak are supportive in principle. But as they rightly say there are relatively few car parks and those that exist are usually full to overflowing even in winter.

A lot of locals believe the area is suffering over-tourism in many parts and that trails and paths are wearing out faster than they can maintain them. I must admit we always go somewhere quieter when the summer hordes arrive.

They suggest there’s more promise in pursuing private businesses, pubs, etc. with car parks and land. DCC and Peak Park aren’t exactly bending over backwards to encourage more vehicles. Outside the Peak it’s possible there may be more support. Like with the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales policy tends to prefer dispersal from the central areas to the surrounding areas.

I agree and have said there is a very good network of small sites in the peaks, so we need to target the less popular areas, we are working on a site a South Normington,
The rugby club at Cromford used to allow overnight stays
Alfreton could be a good target.
Buxton as a motorcaravan park so could allow overnight stays
Chesterfield is still a target
Crich tramway museum as a lot of space
What about a station outside of the peaks? And a train in.
If we follow the Cumbria approach and attraction motorcaravans to the less visited areas that would support the requirements to reduce traffic in the main areas.

Cromford Meadow car park (near Rugby Club) still allows overnight stops
The Canal car Park next to it has no signage preventing parking and has 24 hr tariffs
Crich - will be repeating email to the management tomorrow
Chesterfield will be repeating emails as zero response as yet
NEDDC forwarded their email to DCC who haven't responded

Trains into the Peak District area go to Buxton or Matlock not sure of any decent
