Motorcaravan Spacing Report

Post by Steve »

LEADERSHIP INFORMATION UPDATE ON SPACING REQUIREMENTS FOR MOTORCARAVANS

There has been a concerted effect to promote the message that motorcaravans are not the same as a caravan and do not require campsites. Unfortunately most councils see sleeping overnight as camping and apply the Caravan Sites and Control of Development Act 1960.

Our opinions on this are not relevant ; these are the facts and we can only work with them and focus on getting them updated to more closely represent the needs of the modern self contained motorcaravan and to reduce the requirement for 6m spacing for Aires.

Our leadership team have been working tirelessly on this behind the scenes and making significant progress, we are therefore now able to inform you that we have commissioned a Fire Safety Report on Motorcaravan Overnight Parking.

This report has been produced by one of the UK’s leading experts on fire safety, Fire Decisions Ltd - a company which acts as consultants to many councils carrying out fire risk assessments.

This very detailed and professional report recommends a 3m spacing for self contained motorcaravans where all activity is confined within the vehicle (no external equipment) i.e. on an Aire. This document has been shared with several councils who are looking at implementing this for motorcaravan overnight parking.

Until the report has been accepted across the UK the 6m spacing will be required by planning officials. The legislation applied to exemption certificates also states 6m so at the moment this will also apply to MCC Certified Aires.

In summary CAMpRA are still investigating other options and working closely with several councils and the government on the interpretation of sleeping in a motorcaravan being classed as camping but until this changes we must work within the current guidance.
We have also produced a guide for spacing in car parks based on 3m spacing, for use once you have engaged in discussions with a council. The Motorcaravan Overnight Parking - Fire Safety Report can be used to support the recommended spacing in car parks. This is available in our website library:
