I finally managed to set up email notifications  for the forum.

Here is how I did it on my phone.

1) Sign in to the forum.
2) Top Right - click on your username and then 'User control panel'
3) Choose - 'Board Preferences' - 'Edit notification options'.
4) Select emails for each type of notification by ticking the boxes.
5) For each topic/group you want to receive email notifications for :-
  5a) open the topic/group.
  5b)Now look at the bottom of the page for the tick box which says 'subscribe forum'
  5c) Untick this box, and the wording will change to 'unsubscribe forum'  which actually means you will now receive the emails.
Do section 5 over again for any other topics you are interested in.
